Module 06 - MUZZLELOADERS 101

PRIMER

Primer is the flammable material that helps the powder charge catch on fire.

The two most common primers used today are:

  • #11 Percussion Cap.
  • 209 Muzzleloader Primer.

The #11 Percussion Cap is placed directly on the nipple of the firearm, whereas the 209 Muzzleloader primer (which creates a much hotter spark) must first be placed in a holder, which can then be placed on the nipple. Always check the owner’s manual for your muzzleloader to determine the best primer for your specific firearm.
