Module 11 - IN THE FIELD
Unload your firearm before crossing a fence and reload it once you’re safely on the other side. The steps you take to cross a fence will vary depending on whether you’re hunting alone or if you’re with a buddy.
CROSSING A FENCE ALONE:
STEP 1: Unload your firearm and leave the action open.
STEP 2: Cautiously place your firearm on the ground, under the fence, with the muzzle pointing away from you and away from any dirt and debris.
STEP 3: Cross the fence at a point further down from the firearm so that if you fall off the fence, you won't land on the firearm.
STEP 4: Retrieve the firearm by picking it up by the stock (NOT by the muzzle).
STEP 5: Check the barrel for obstructions.
CROSSING A FENCE WITH A FRIEND:
STEP 1: Unload both firearms and leave the actions open.
STEP 2: Hunter ‘A’ should carefully hold both of the firearms while Hunter ‘B’ crosses the fence.
STEP 3: Hunter ‘A’ should make sure the muzzles are pointed in a safe direction and then hand both firearms to Hunter ‘B’ who has just crossed the fence. Hunter ‘B’ should verbally confirm reception of the firearms before Hunter ‘A’ releases them.
STEP 4: Hunter ‘A’ can now cross the fence safely.
STEP 5: Once across, both hunters should safety check their firearms. Remember, someone else has just handled your firearm, so you’ll need to CHECK IT YOURSELF.
